Charles Mills received his first Peterson field guide and tried his hand at photography at an early age. But it wasn’t until high school, when he met the first of many mentors in his life through his local Audubon chapter, that his skills really developed. Most importantly, they taught him that “the best available field guide was the one each of us birders carry behind our eyes and between our ears.” Over the decades he has played a role in the development of the ARBIRD-L email discussion group, the AR Rare Bird Records Committee, and the AAS Checklist of AR Birds. Charles has established himself over the decades as one of the most knowledgeable birders in Arkansas. Since retiring as Postmaster in Ogden, his has devoted more time during the past five years to photography of not only birds but also butterflies and dragonflies.
