Preparing for Purple Martins

Volunteers fixing, installing boxes

Volunteer Andy Miller, a long-time Purple Martin steward, is getting our Purple Martin boxes at the Little Rock Audubon Center ready for this year's nesting season. He and Arkansas Master Naturalists Llahoma Jackson and Davis Thompson have cleaned and repaired the nest boxes, and placed nesting material in each compartment. Andy has also installed a third box for the birds. These volunteers have agreed to monitor our Purple Martin colony, as well as the Chimney Swift towers on the property.

The first Purple Martin scouts arrive in Arkansas in early February. Nesting begins in late March. Chimney Swifts arrive in Arkansas in mid-March and begin nesting the first week of May.
